What is Masterbatch?
Raw plastic and polymer isn’t produced with colour, the colouring process requires additives and/or pigments. This is where Masterbatch comes in. Masterbatch is a highly concentrated polymer-based mixture of colours and additives that is cooled, cut and made into small pellets by a pelletiser.
At Abbey Masterbatch, we supply mainly Black, White, Coloured and Additive masterbatch, working out of Ashton Under Lyne, UK.
The Benefits of Masterbatch
Alongside the application of colour, Masterbatch brings a handful of benefits to its use over compound counterparts. Its compact pellet form allows for much more efficient, easier use with no mess during the pigmentation process. Its also much easier to dispense the pellets into manageable amounts and keep your colour consistent, especially over larger projects.
Masterbatches, dependant on their colours and types, supply a variety of capabilities, some being; UV, humidity or temperature resistance. This doesn’t only benefit the subject of pigmentation, but also extends the shelf life of whatever additive is incapsulated in the masterbatch pellets
Types of Masterbatch and their qualities
Black Masterbatch
Black Masterbatch offers qualities such as; UV Protection, Heat and Cold Resistance and is an electrical conductor, as well as offering a sleek, jet black finish. Some common uses of black masterbatch may be:
- Irrigation and drainage pipes
- Electrical products like washing machines, toasters etc.
- Certain sections on automotives that need to have a higher thermal resistance.
- Wires, cables and tubes
Colour Masterbatch
Three primary colours (Red, Yellow and Blue) are used to synthesize any other desired tint. Using pellet masterbatch over other liquid alternatives can prove more economical, it produces less waste and needs significantly less effort and attention. The colouring is generally easier to keep consistent and still provides some similar protective capabilities to that of black masterbatch.
White Masterbatch
White masterbatch, much like Black masterbatch offers a handful of qualities like; heat resistance, UV protection, non-toxic and provide a superior dispersion, as well as a beautiful white finish. Some common uses of White masterbatch may be:
- Packaging, more commonly food packaging
- Films and sheets
- Woven sacks
- Blow moulds and extrusion processes
